Rally New Zealand, Leg 2

New Zealand 2006, photo by SWRT

Petter is still holding 6. position after leg 2 of Rally New Zealand have finished. He was hoping for improvement on his 32th birthday, but had to deal with a failed intercom on the first stage; he couldn’t hear Phils voice. A driveshaft broke on stage 3, and heavy rain and the muddy conditions made the tyrechoice extreme difficult. Brother Henning had a roll, but managed to continue driving. Teammate Chris had to retire from the rally after a puncture sent him off the stage. Valentino Rossi is on 13th place and Emma Gilmour is number 27.

There are six more stages to go on Leg 3 sunday.

Results after Leg 2, Rally New Zealand 2006:

1   Grønholm, Ford
2  Hirvonen, Ford +50,3
3  Stohl, Peugeot +2.06,2
4   Sordo, Citroen +2.23,1
5  Pons, Citroen +2.38,4
6  Petter, Subaru +3.25,1
14  Henning, Peugeot +18.15,2

Rally New Zealand – Leg 1

New Zealand 2006, photo by SWRT

Leg 1 of Rally New Zealand is completed, with Petter holding 6. position. With heavy rain during the night, the stages were extremely muddy and wet, and making the tyrechoice difficult. Both Petter and Chris chose the wrong tyres, and were struggeling to find the grip. Grønholm is in the lead with teammate Hirvonen only 31,2 sec behind. Henning is no. 7, after having trouble (again..) with a water leak. Valentino Rossi is no. 23 – 10.55,1 behind Grønholm. The MotoGP-champion was very carefull on the slippery conditions, but did better the second going (maybe he got used to having a person riding with him…). The partner of Chris’ codriver Glenn, Emma Gilmour, is also attending this rally, and is no. 19 after Leg 1 is finished.

Results – Leg 1:

 1 Grønholm, Ford
 2 Hrivonen, Ford +31,2
 3 Sordo, Citroen  +1.16,2
 4 Stohl, Peugeot  +1.18,4
 5 Pons, Citroen  +1.42,5
 6 Petter, Subuaru  +1.48,3
 7 Henning, Peugeot +2.43,5
 9 Chris, Subaru +3.48,8

I’m ready for rally on New Zealand now. This year it is a lot of new stages with a lot of curves. It is going to be hard, due to all the loose gravel on the stages.

This year the event is moved from Auckland over to the westcoast and the city of Hamilton and Mystery Creek Events Centre. New Zealand consists of several islands. The three largest is North Island, with the capitol Wellington and Hamilton, and also there are South Island and Stewart Island. Average speed is about 100km/ph. The entry list shows 48 starters, including motorcykling champion Valentino Rossi, who will compete in a Subaru Impreza. Sebastien Loeb will be in New Zealand, but only for the recce. He is still not fully recovered after his mountainbike-accident.
