Technicians in SWRT

Wales 2006

Have you ever wondered what Petter’s technicians does when Petter’s car is not at the servicepark? Do they go for a swim or watch a good movie? None of it, working for SWRT is hard work from sunrise to sunset, all year. But I’ve heard they really enjoy what they do. And I’ve learned that practical jokes goes hand by hand with high working moral, and they care a lot for each other, and they might invite you in for a cup of tea!

During an event the team and the technicians are underlined strict rules set by the FIA. Every service is scheduled beforehand, and you don’t clock in to early or to late. They start with a 10 minutes service each morning, and continue with one or two 30 minutes services during the day. They are only allowed with 6 technicians to work on the car at the same time, and all of them need to have a special arm band showing that they are allowed to touch the car. Without the arm band you are not allowed to do anything with the car, not even putting a bottle of drinking water inside. But you can remove your arm band and give to another technician, and they he is allowed to work on the car – and not you. At the end of each day they have Flexi Service. Now the teams have 45 minutes to work on the car, and they can decide at what time they will do that, as long as the car is in Parc Ferme in time. During Flexi service they can also choose to put all twelve technicians to work on one car at the time.

Phils blog about the new car and Rally Mexico

Phil Mills

It’s a case of mixed feelings after Rally Mexico. On one hand, our retirement on the opening leg was a massive disappointment, but on the other hand, we were leading the rally at the time and that’s a huge encouragement for myself, Petter and the entire Subaru World Rally Team.

We went to Mexico this rally with a new car, the Impreza WRC2007. Spotting the exterior differences isn’t easy, but don’t been fooled: it features some key revisions under the bonnet compared to the old car. The boys back at base have prioritised some of the weaknesses of the WRC2006 and set about improving those areas. Among the main changes are: a new radiator and intercooler pack, some suspension and damper tweaks, revised weight distribution and some changes to the airflow through the front end.

It didn’t take Petter and I very long to realise this car is a step in the right direction. A fortnight ago we had a positive test in Spain, and we’ve always gone well in the gravel stages of central America, with a win and a second-place to our name in 2005 and 2006 respectively.

The opening morning of the rally on Friday was one of those times when you realise everything is starting to click into place. If I say the first three stages of Rally Mexico were uneventful, don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to make it sound like we weren’t trying. It’s just that everything worked so well: stage one – fastest time. Stage two – fastest time. Stage three – fastest time. As easy as that. Sure, our road position helped slightly because the guys running in front of us were sweeping some of the slippery loose gravel off the road, but I always think you know you’re in with a shout when three stages go by without a hint of a problem.

It seems Lady Luck was saving up all our bad fortune for the afternoon. Towards the end of stage five, we began to get some warnings about the oil pressure. By the end of the stage, the pressure was zero. Soon after the end of the stage we pulled over on the road section after the stage and it was game over.

Nevertheless, it was a fantastic feeling to be back in there fighting with Sebastian Loeb – exactly where we should be. Looking at the pace of our rivals throughout the rest of the event, we could have been at least on the podium, if not the top step, by the end. Still, the most positive aspect of the weekend is that the new car has provided us with a solid platform. We need to do a bit more development with it, but I’m confident we’re heading in the right direction – and it’s great to be able to report that.

Regards,
Phil

Rally Mexico are finished with Sebastien Loeb as number one and Marcus Grønholm number two. Petter had to retire from the rally after he suffered a oil-leak on SS5. With three stagewins the same morning, he was in the lead when to retire. He said it was no fun having to retire, but he was really glad he got the chance to show that the new car has the winning-potential, and that he easily could find the rythm. Tomorrow he is off for two days of PR-work in Mexico City and after that straight home to wife and son in Monte Carlo.

Next event is Rally Portugal, 29. March – 1. April 2007.

Rally Mexico have started

Petter Solberg in Mexico, photo by SWRT

Petter had a brilliant start in Rally Mexico, with 3 stagewins. The cars are now heading back to the servicepark, before they set off again for the second loop of the same stages. Petter is very happy with the results and says this is very good for the Subaru-team.

Henning did not get the same good start, after hitting a rock on the first stage the car rolled. Henning and Cato managed to finish all three stages of today, but with major gearchange- and diffproblems.

Sebastien Loeb got hit with a stone on stage 2, which caused him a broken windscreen on the codrivers side. Loeb said himself after the stage, that the stone was thrown by a spectator. This has happend before in Mexico.

SS4 starts at 2002 norwegian time, 1302 local time.

Shakedown

Mexico 2006, photo by SWRT

At shakedown this morning Sordo ended with the fastest time, with Loeb only 0,6 seconds after and Petter with the third fastest time, +1,8sec. Petter said that he is very happy with the car and that the changes they have done on the car is working well so far. “We will continue to improve the car during the weekend, and the car has so much more potential, which makes me so trilled about driving this weekend”, Petter said when he stopped by his hotel this afternoon.

Thin air and high temperature meets the drivers when they set off tomorrow morning. The servicepark, which is based on the lowest part of the rally, is on 1800 meters above sealevel, and two of the stages on Friday is on 2700 metres above sea level. The thin air makes the engine loose as much as 30 % of its power, and the drivers need to be in good shape to cope with the thin air and the high temperature.

Marcus Grønholm sets off first tomorrow, and that might not be the best startingposition on these fast stages with a lot of loose gravel. Petter starts as car number 6, and is quite happy with his position.
