Here it is – the first stage for the new car. The start-line is in the middle of the picture, and then it is a left turn before it goes up a pretty steep hill and continue on the top of the hill.
No road-signs, or a lot of road-signs! It’s not very easy to know which way to go…..
The 7th event in this years championship is coming up, and the Acropolis Rally of Greece will be a milestone in the SWRT’s history – and also for Petter and Phil. Finally the new Subaru Impreza WRC2008 will make its appearance. The new car will be presented at a pressconference on Wednesday evening, and the first test will be Shakedown Thursday morning.
Servicepark and HQ are moved again this year, and are now based at the Tatoi Military Airport North-West for Athens.
The organisers has announced that they will present a special award, The Colin McRae Trophy, to the driver and codriver that achieves the highest average speed through all the stages, apart from the Superspecials. Colin McRae, who won the Acropolis Rally 5 times, died in a helicopter-accident last year.
The drivers will go through 20 twisty and boulder-filled stages on gravel north and west of Athens during the weekend. With average speed higher than Sardinia, and temperature above +30 degrees, this is one of the toughest events in the WRC.
Marcus Grønholm won the rally in 2007, while Petter ended 3rd.

– We received a lot of good suggestions for the VIP-competition. I have read them all, and finally I decided that Kate, Kjell Ole and Kazuko should be the winners. Kate and Kjell Ole will be my guests in Greece for the Acropolis Rally, while Kazuko (who wasn’t able to come to Greece) will be my guest for Rally Finland.
Thank you all for all the good suggestions I received – and thanks a million for all the great support I get from the members in PSSC.
Kjell Ole Fønstelien, Norway; When Petter crossed the finish in Wales 2003 and became the World Champion, he came out of his car and ran straight into my arms. I gave him a norwegian hat!
Kate Yates, UK; To see the smile in his eyes, delight in his laughter, happiness in his heart and enjoy one hell of a party!
Kazuko Goto, Japan; I was impressed by Petters victory in 2003, so I bought Legacy. I’ve been studying english to talk with him!
Finally the new car is ready; I have been waiting sooo long for this! Subaru World Rally Team has now announced that they will launch the new Subaru Impreza STI 2008 for Rally Acropolis in Greece next week. Both Phil and I have been waiting for this day for a long time now, and it feels so good to finally look ahead towards new possibilities – with the new car. A press conference will be held in Athens on Wednesday 28. May.Right now I am on my way to the final test before the great premiere, and I’m must admit that I’m really excited.Petter S
Press announcement: For immediate release Tue 20 May
The Subaru World Rally Team and STi are pleased to announce the launch date of the Impreza WRC2008. The most radically different Subaru World Rally Car in 15 years, the WRC2008 is ready to make its debut on the seventh round of this year’s World Rally Championship, the Acropolis Rally of Greece, from 29 May – 1 June.
The event will be marked by an official launch in Greece on the evening of Wednesday 28 May, prior to the start of the rally.
The new car is based on the latest road going Subaru Impreza which was introduced in June 2007. Although featuring radically new styling the Impreza WRC2008 retains the well proven Subaru horizontally-opposed turbocharged engine combined with Symmetrical All Wheel Drive. The WRC2008 will also sport a dramatic new livery created around the Subaru corporate identity but at the same time preserving the iconic blue identity familiar to rally fans worldwide.
“We are very excited to be able to launch the all-new Impreza WRC2008 ahead of schedule” said David Richards, Subaru World Rally Team principal. “It is testament to the dedication and commitment of the team behind the scenes in the UK and at STi in Japan. Just as the latest Impreza road car represents a new era for Subaru so the WRC2008 represents a new era for all of us at the Subaru World Rally Team and I am confident that we will arrive in Greece able to fight competitively.”
The team’s objective has always been to launch the WRC2008 as soon as the testing confirmed that good steps forward in overall performance had been made. We are confident that introducing the car in Greece will enable the team to be highly competitive in the second half of the season and give Petter and Chris the best opportunity to win in 2008.
A new area of the team’s website has been launched to coincide with the official unveiling, counting down to the actual launch and heralding the team’s new era whilst celebrating the Impreza’s remarkable heritage at the forefront of world rallying. At the time of the official launch on 28 May, the site will be updated with more information on the WRC2008 including facts & figures and interviews with key team personnel.
The new car will be ready for Rally Acropolis, 29. May – 1. June. The official launch will be in Greece on Wednesday 28. May.
