Goodwood Festival of Speed
Hi Guys
Petter is going to the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday 12th July, so I just thought you might like to know a bit about it.
It started in 1936 when the Duke of Richmond held a private hill climb through the park at Goodwood House and now has grown into one of the largest celebrations of motor sport in the world. Rally car past and present, F1 cars, sports cars, vintage cars and motorbikes all race against each other to be the fastest up the hill. Recently they introduced a 2.5km loose gravel rally stage designed by Hannu Mikkola, fantastic for us rally fans! Petter likes it too, although in an interview last year he asked if they could make the jump bigger!
Why do I go? It’s the atmosphere and the fact you can get close to some of the most memorable cars ever seen, because the paddock is open to the public. The Bugatti I’m next to is worth £1,000,000 and the guy showing it was so pleased to talk about his beautiful car. If you’re into cars it’s definitely the place to go. Here are a few pictures I took last year, and I’ll post some new pictures after this years event for all you lucky people.
Finally, to me one of the most important reasons to go to Goodwood is the money raised by volunteers like myself and all the other crazy guys who stand around for hours in the rain and the mud collecting for the Richard Burns Foundation. Yes I am the one looking very silly and very wet in the photo! Last year we raised £50,000, which went to helping teenagers with cancer. This year the charity is the ‘Make a Wish Foundation’, a charity which tries to give children who have life threatening diseases their wishes. It was especially chosen by Colin McRae’s family.
I think it’s going to be an emotional, exhausting, but truly wonderful day.
Kate
