Cyprus Rally, 12 – 15 March 2009
This week we are heading for Cyprus and the 2009 seasons third event. With a new engine in his Citroen Xsara, Petter Solberg is aiming to beat his sixth place in Norway.
- Citroen has given me a new engine and together with new dampers from Reiger, and more time for preparations, I really think it will be possible to fight in Cyprus. We have been analyzing and preparing in the weeks after Rally Norway and I am confident that we are much more prepared this time. And, there has been time for fitness-training.
Rally Cyprus is known to be a challenging gravel rally, but this year it will be a combination of both tarmac and gravel. Shakedown and Friday’s tests are all on tarmac, while Saturday and Sunday stages are on gravel. All drivers will run on gravel tyres, and they can use a maximum of 46 tires. The Cyprus Rally is based in Limassol, and stages are in the Troodos mountains. The rally starts with a ceremonial start on the beachside of Limassol Thursday evening, on continues with a total of 14 stages on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 34 cars are on the entry list.
Petter Solberg won Rally Cyprus in 2003, while Sebastien Loeb was fastest in 2006, the last time Cyprus was hosting a WRC event.
