Argentina report from Elda

Petter Solberg and Elda, Rally Argentina 2009.

“The whole family is already in the city house with the bitter flavor of the abandonment of Petter´s and Phil car after moments of a lot of stress and under an intense task on behalf of the whole team during on Friday and Saturday for the dusty roads of Córdoba´s mountains.

In the Sunday morning when the team was practically caressing the podium, the car stopped and Petter had to retire in a SS20 just 5 kilometers to the arrival the final of the stage.

During this weekend we had the great opportunity to see the hard work of the most consistent rally team that I never seen in WRC and how all the boys and girls have worked for this rally was successful.

Regrettably the bad luck played the carp again when the team also had to suffer the robbery of the briefcase of Mr. Ken Rees with the whole documentation in the service park ….. these things would never have to happen because of the security that the organization had placed around the whole park, but there are the mistakes that they will have to change in the future. Today I also listened by the press that our rally driver Coyote Villagra of Ford Munchis team was stolen too, with so good luck that a little boy found his coat and his wallet with his documents in the proximities of the service park.

After all that happened in last weekend I don’t have words to say thanks in my name and in the name of my family to Petter and his team for the pleasing moments shared during Argentina´s rally 2009.

I will keep all these moments in my heart like one of my biggest treasures and like one of very emotive moments in my life.
Thanks Petter Solberg World Rally Team: I´m so proud of you all. Good luck for the next event.”

Rally Argentina 2009

Petter Solberg retired from Rally Argentina, and got robbed at service.

- This was not what we came here for, Petter said when he returned back to service after the stop. We were third, and I intended to keep that position, but then we lost the fuel pressure. 5kms before the finish line it all stopped. No fuel pressure at all, and there was nothing we could do about it. We had no other choice than to retire.

The weekend started well for Petter and Phil, with a stage win on Friday. They had to tackle a few problems on Saturday, when they lost the boost and later a puncture and an overheating engine. But managed to be 4th at the end of day 2. Sunday started out good, but came to a sudden end when they lost the fuel pressure and had to retire.

Then, just as the team members were packing everything at the servicepark, someone stole Team Manager Ken Rees’ briefcase. With all the team documentation, plans, laptop, money, and passport. – What a day, Petter says. First we got ripped off from our third place, and then we got robbed. When you travel around the world like we do, the briefcase is your office and loosing that is a disaster. The money can be replaced, but can you imagine all the work hours that briefcase contained!
Sebastien Loeb won the rally, and Henning Solberg ended third. Mikko Hirvonen had to retire with engine problems on Saturday.

Petter is now going for a week’s holiday together with his family, before starting to prepare for Rally Italy Sardegna (21. – 24. May).

Day 2 in Argentina is completed, and Petter is 4th overall. Sebastien Loeb is leading the rally with his team colleague Dani Sordo 2nd. Jari Matti Latvala has climbed to third overall, a minute ahead of Petter. Mikko Hirvonen was forced to retire from the rally with engine problems.

- Today was not a very good day. It started with a boost-problem on the morning stages, and then we had a puncture on the first stage after the service and lost about 30 seconds. On the next two stages the engine was overheated, but we survived that to. And finally I had a big moment on the short stage before the stadium. 200 meters into the stage we just launched off after a crest, and I really thought that was it, but we got through that as well. It was unbelievable. After that I backed off a bit. I was really hoping to fight for third today, but now I’ve just have to work to keep the fourth.

Rally Argentina continues with 5 more stages Sunday. First car is on stage at 0848 local time.
