Petter is ready for Rally Argentina

This week we are heading to Argentina and the fifth event of the season. This is also the first long haul event this year. Petter and his World Rally Team are all ready in Villa Carlos Paz preparing for the rally.

- Rally Argentina offers some of the most spectacular stages in the WRC. The soft and sandy stages plunge trough a varied landscape, from all the water splashes to the narrow and twisty stages up in the mountains. You need to stay sharp, and it’s crucial to have the correct line, Petter says. – The car arrives with a new engine and the same damper set up as we used at Cyprus, and I’m confident that we will be fighting this weekend.

The holiday resort Villa Carlos Paz, not far from Cordoba, is hosting the event, and the rally is known for all the water splashes, twisty mountain stages and a lot of spectators. The most famous mountain stage is Saturdays El Condor, with the highest point at 2195mtrs above sea level. 23 stages are awaiting the drivers, and a total of 332kms. Road section between the stages will be 1202kms.

Sebastien Loeb has won this event for the past four years. Petter’s best result is second in both 2002 and 2006. In 2008 he was forced to retire with electrical problems.

59 drivers are on the entry list. Rally Argentina starts with a Super Special Thursday, 23. April.

- I never give up!

Petter Solberg, Rally Portugal 2009. Photo Tony Welam.

It has been a though few weeks for Petter lately. He finished fourth in the Rally of Portugal with two viruses fighting in his body; today the test results came back, telling him he is getting better.

- I’m not 100% well yet, but now everything is under control and I’m feeling a lot better. I have been well taken care of by my doctor, but still, it has been a though few weeks.

After a week’s rest with his family, he has now started preparations for Rally Argentina. - With a new engine, Cyprus-dampers and a wider substructure I think we are well prepared for Argentina.

4 of 12 events are completed in the WRC, and Petter is fifth overall – with only 3 events. Next weekend the Petter Solberg World Rally Team is heading for Cordoba and Rally Argentina.

Petter 4th in Portugal

Petter Solberg, Rally Portugal 2009.

  - The afternoon loop today was really good, and I’m quite happy with the performance this weekend. We knew it would be much tougher than Cyprus, but still I reckon we have done well. Both Citroen and Ford came to Portugal with improved motor and chassis, still we are fighting with them. We also got more damper-experience and this is good for Argentina. We are fourth, and that is not so bad, the three in front are manufacturer-teams, and we are the best privateer. Also, we are three Norwegians in the top six.

Petter ended fourth in Rally Portugal, and secured 5 points in Drivers Championship. Sebastien Loeb won the event, and Mikko Hirvonen ended second. Dani Sordo ended third, and Henning climbed up to fifth overall. Mads Østbergs rounds up the great Norwegian result with his 6th. Marcus Grønholm had an accident on Saturday and was forced to retire. Jari Matti Latvala rolled off the road on Friday, end retired.

Petter was next on the road after Marcus’ accident, and got caught in a lot of dust when passing him. The organiser adjusted his time with 11,7 seconds as a result of that. Dust has been a big issue this weekend, especially on Sunday. Earlier there was a little breeze blowing the dust away before the next car came through, but on Sunday there was no wind. As a result the organiser decided to run the cars with a 3 minutes gap between.

Quote Team Manager Ken Rees
“We came to Portugal, and it’s only our third event. It’s a different event than both Norway and Cyprus as it was faster and more crests and Petter had to learn without any testing. The event went well for us with a 100% reliability of the car and Petter driving both quickly and neatly. We achieved what we came for, which was a good result and points. At many stages we have had various minor technical problems with the car which cost us some time and possibly a place on the podium. At the end we achieved fourth overall, moving us a place up in the World Championship and this for a small private team is a great achievement. Looking ahead to Argentina, we are looking forward to this event as this is one that Petter likes. He has previously been competitive there, although then he was in full factory supported car. The conditions in Argentina can change rapidly from hard, dusty surface to very muddy, slippy conditions as the storms can come quickly and change the roads considerably. As a team we look forward to going and continue our assault on the world championship and come away with more valuable points.”

Next event is Rally Argentina, 23. – 26. April. Petter are flying in to Cordoba the weekend before, and will use the next two weeks to relax and get well from the two viruses he’s got.

Service day 3

- We lost a locking pin on the bonnet on today’s first stage, managed to fix that on the road section. But, then on the second stage the other pin broke and the bonnet almost came off. Luckily it stayed, and didn’t damage our windscreen. It’s a lot of dust on the stage today, making it really difficult to see anything. The organiser just decided that there will be 3 minutes between the cars in the second loop.

Live From The Field

Its an early start on the final day here in Portugal. But with some 80′s music and Lorraines breakfast, everyone in the team are ready to rock again! We got a note from the stewards also this morning, and they had decided to give me a new time on stage 8, when I got caught behind Marcus yesterday.
